Golf Course Supervisor with Stroke Wins Unum Disability Insurance Appeal

We discuss a successful appeal overturning Unum’s denial of disability benefits for a golf course maintenance director who suffered a stroke. Unum initially approved his claim but later denied benefits after his doctors failed to complete required forms and Unum misinterpreted medical records—such as notes about traveling and signing up for a motivational running challenge—as evidence he could work.

After taking the case, we obtained the full claim file, corrected misleading medical information, and secured objective evidence through neuropsychological and functional capacity evaluations, as well as a proper vocational analysis showing his job was physically and cognitively demanding. The appeal proved he could not perform his regular occupation, leading Unum to reverse the denial and reinstate benefits.
